During times of crisis, families often get separated. Children are lost with no way of finding their families. Humanitarian organizations devote lots of time and effort to bringing these families back together, through a process called Family Tracing and Reunification, or FTR.
RapidFTR is an Open Source project targeted towards creating "faster paper" for field workers trying to reunite lost children with their families. The project consists of a database and API that saves information about children. The data can be accessed via either a web interface or a BlackBerry application, and versions for the Android phone is currently being developed.
The project started as a student project by Dharmarajan R. Ayakkad, Mustafa Bagdatli, Karla Calderon, Jorge Just and Rune Madsen in the Design for Unicef class in 2009 at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program. It soon grew - with the help of the company ThoughtWorks - to a larger open source project, and it is currently being developed by a arge number of voluntary coders. The project is backed by Unicef.
