API for the World

API for the World (A4W) is a project that was ideated, created and presented in less than 24 hours by 6 fellow students at ITP. The project is a physical device and an API, which can turn anything with a power cord into a networked object. It allows the electric appliances around us to communicate with the internet, filling the gap between "smart" and low-tech devices. A4W is a social network for everyday objects, because you can use an online dashboard to create unique profiles for different objects in your house and connect them to a variety of web services: let your lamp post to Twitter or you oven post directly to Patchube every time it's being used.

The physical device is built with a current sensor, an Arduiono and a XBee for wirelessly communication. The API is built in Ruby on Rails.

the API for the World project was featured on TechCrunch and ZDNet
